Song: Amazing Love
Bible Passage: Psalm 126

Amazing Love

I’m forgiven because You were forsaken, I’m accepted, You were condemned.
I am alive and well, Your spirit is within me, Because You died and rose again.
Amazing love, How can it be That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true. It’s my joy to honor You, In all I do, I honor You.

[Chris Tomlin]

We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy.  And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.”  Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us! What joy! [Psalm 126: 2 – 3]

T

he Lord has done marvelous things and will continue to do amazing things for us throughout our lives and beyond.  The ultimate act of unconditional love was found when God sent His only Son to die for us.  Wouldn’t that be the ultimate sacrifice for each of us as well, to give our life for someone else?  Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”  (John 15:13)  Yet when we are faced with such a decision how many of us would turn our backs.  Peter did.  The night our Lord was betrayed and arrested Peter said he was ready to lay down his life for Jesus.  Instead he ran and hid.  And as we know, Peter was forgiven, and so are we.

A story circulated many years ago regarding a little girl who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness.
The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. He pondered for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her life."
As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?”
Being young, the boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood.

This young boy was willing to offer the ultimate unconditional sacrifice.  Would we do the same?  Most of us will never be faced with such a decision but we are faced with many others every day.  Do we sacrifice our time to help someone in need?  Do we sacrifice our hard earned money to pay for a hotel room for someone who needs shelter?  Groceries, clothes, doctor’s appointments, the list goes on and on.  When we give of ourselves to help someone in need, we are giving directly to Jesus.  (Matthew 25:40)  Remember there is a world of difference between “I’ll do it” and "I’ll think about it!”   “Amazing love, how can it be, that You my King should die for me.”
