Song: The Power Of Your Love
Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 8: 1 - 9: 27

The Power Of Your Love

Lord I come to You, let my heart be changed, renewed,
Flowing from the grace I found in You.
Lord I’ve come to know the weaknesses I see in me
Will be stripped away by the power of Your love.
Hold me close, let Your love surround me.  Bring me near, draw me to Your side.
As I wait I’ll rise up like the eagle, and I will soar with You
Your spirit leads me on in the power of Your love. [Darlene Zschech]

Saul replied, “But I am only from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest tribe in Israel and my family is the least important of all the families of that tribe.  Why are you talking to me like this?”
[1 Samuel 9: 21]

alse humility keeps us from wholeheartedly committing to God.  Saul really wasn’t from the “least” family, his father was quite wealthy and influential. [1 Samuel 9: 1] Throughout his life, even after being called by God to lead the Israelites as their first king, Saul vacillated between his feelings and his convictions.  In every situation he was more worried about himself than his calling, he was a selfish man who knew how to play the humility game.

By playing that game Saul held back his trust and commitment from God and tried not to appear arrogant or controlling.  But Saul always needed to control things, when things didn’t go his way he blamed others and made up excuses for his behavior, he struggled constantly with jealousy, insecurity, arrogance, deceit, impulsiveness and selfishness.  False humility kept him from allowing God to work through him as King of Israel and eventually God’s spirit left him.  Sadly, because of his weaknesses, Saul never became God’s man even though he was called by Him and given a Godly mission and purpose.

True humility is not self degradation, it is a realistic self assessment, commitment to service and a character trait that always gives God the glory, as humble people we should always be comparing ourselves with Christ, striving to model our lives after Him, realizing our sinfulness and understanding our limitations.  We all have God given gifts, talents and strengths that need to be humbly used in service to Him.

Saul lost out because he would not let God’s love give rest to his heart, he would not come to God and let the grace of God, the love of God take him just as he was to where  God knew he could be.  Saul couldn’t be content in his weaknesses and let the power of God’s love strip them away and change him.  We can only imagine the course of Saul’s life had he let God’s love surround him and draw him close.  Imagine your life lived with the Power Of His Love.
